Algebra Class Online!

Greetings students!

Welcome to your first online class meeting.

First, you will need to take the Quiz 8 ( << click here).  You may print out a copy of the quiz or simply view the quiz on screen if you prefer. You will enter the answers for your quiz inside the gradebook. This quiz must be completed before the next class meeting.

Next, you will need to print out a copy of Lesson 9 ( << click here). Watch the video below and complete the class notes as you view the video.  You will submit a completed hard-copy of Lesson 9 on Tuesday. You will also submit Lesson 8 on Tuesday.

If you need help, you may arrive to class early for tutorials (5:30 p.m.) or you may email your questions.

Google Hangouts and more!

Greetings students.  We had our first Google+ Hangout last night, but unfortunately only two of you showed up!

If you haven't already done so, please complete the following tasks this week:

• Get yourself a headset and microphone to use for the hangout
• Download and install the latest Google+ Hangout App or Plug-in (for smart phone, tablet and/or desktop computer)
• Create a Google+ Account
• Add me (Sue Petrey) to your circles (any circle except 'following') so that I can invite you to the next Hangout!

The two students who showed up to our first Hangout will receive 10 points on Quiz 3 and 10 points on Assignment 3 tonight!  Thanks Fabi and Patrick!

Also, if you haven't already done so, please click tab > College Algebra - Summer 1 - 2013 at the top of this page to see the materials and answer keys for your class.  You should check this page regularly for updates and to correct assignments (and submit if applicable).

I will announce in class tonight the date of our first test and the night for our next hangout!  See you soon!

Google Hangouts for CTC College Algebra 2013!

Greetings!

We will be meeting online several times over the course of the summer.  To facilitate these online meetings we will be using Google+ Hangouts.  Before the second class meeting, you should do each of the following:

• Locate a computer, tablet or smartphone to access the internet.
• Create a Google+ account
• Acquire a headset with microphone.
• Download the new Google+ Hangout Application
• Circle me on Google+

After our second class meeting, I will announce a time for our first 'trial' hangout.  Because the first hangout will be a learning experience for many, there will be no penalty for those who are unable to successfully participate, however, there will be hangouts in the future where participation will be mandatory.

This class normally requires an online lab in addition to the face-to-face meetings, these online meetings are in place of this additional lab requirement.  We may also have 1 or more actual class meetings online (instead of the regular face-to-face).  All hangouts will be announced in class and on this website.

CTC 1351 Google+ Hangout!

Getting Started with Google Hangouts

Greetings Students:

At some point during this semester, I would like to host a Google Hangout for your class. This Hangout may replace an actual face to face class, or we may just make it an 'extra'  assignment for one or more classes.

In order to enjoy these as they are intended, you will need to do the following.  Ideally you will have all of this accomplished before we return from spring break.

• First, you will need a web-cam.  These are often built into laptops and tablets, so you may not need to purchase anything.  If you are working on a desk-top computer, you can purchase a small webcam for under $20 at nearly any discount store (i.e. Walmart) or online (i.e. amazon.com or www.newegg.com).

• Second, you will need a microphone.  Some mobile devices come with microphones pre-installed, but I would recommend getting headphones with built in microphone. The prices vary, depending on the quality you would like, but you can get these for under $20 at nearly any discount store (i.e. Walmart) or online (i.e. amazon.com or www.newegg.com).

• Next, you will need to familiarize yourself with Google Hangouts (and, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look around Google+, too) and get your computer (or device) set up with the Google Hangout Plug In.

Finally, I will probably embed the Google Hangout into this blog, which basically means you'll be able to come here to watch and listen to a You-Tube video of the Hangout (but not speak or contribute) in case you never manage to get yourself into the actual Hangout.  This also means everyone (include those who participated)  will be able to go back to view and review the Hangout (which will then be recorded) as often as necessary to learn what you missed.
